Hellooo everyone! ☀️ How was your day? I spent my morning editing spreadsheets at work, so I decided to spend my afternoon walking around a forest!
Walking around, climbing trees, enjoying the green space and fresh air… it was exactly what I needed! Made me all inspired to get back on here and blog. What am I blogging about? Well – my blog, kind of.
I’m Having a Blogging Identity Crisis
I haven’t been blogging as much as I would like to lately. I’ve kind of lost direction. During Pride month all my blogging had a purpose, I was fixed on a topic and had it all planned out. I wrote 8 posts that month; I’ve only written 3 in the months that followed. I’m in a bit of a transitional phase at the moment – I have a lot of things happening in my head and behind the scenes that I haven’t really been sharing. I think maybe it’s time to get those things out and tell you what I’m up to.
What’s Happening Behind the Scenes
I’m redesigning my blog! I do art and graphic design for a living, but you would not know it from looking at my website. I’ve been wanting to change that for quite a while, but I finally have the ideas and motivation now. I’ve got all my sketches done, I just need to create the final graphics and sort out my blog theme. My current biggest annoyance? The fact you have to pay to unlock CSS customisation on WordPress. I just want to change the colour of my links without paying £7 a month or doing it manually every time!! (If anyone knows how to do this pleeeeaaaaase help me out.)
Gosh, it’s been so long since I’ve done digital art. I’ve missed it! I wanted art to be a much bigger part of this blog and I just haven’t got to that stage yet. Hopefully a better design will be the start of that. (And yes, I do have green hair in real life.)
My Latest Project
I’m trying to set up an Etsy store! Creating stuff is my passion and I would love for it to one day be my profession. I love drawing, designing merch, and creating all sorts of things, from sewing to crochet. The first item I’m planning on selling is… book sleeves!
I have a blast making these for myself and my friends, and I want to share them with the world, too! It’s just so fun picking out the different fabrics and design combinations. Book sleeves are my favourite type of bookish merch, and the piece I find most useful. I’m definitely planning to introduce other things, like bookmarks, prints, pins and keyrings, maybe even character plushies! But those will take time and planning to introduce. For now I’m happy to stick with a core item that I know I can make, and make well.
My plan is to launch the store during September, but I’m a bit behind on preparations at the moment so we’ll see how that goes. For now I’m just happy to finally be pursuing a dream that I’ve had for so long. (Also I’m super excited to get my own business cards. You can currently find me lovingly caressing paper samples.)
The Way Forward
In terms of design, I’m going to be working on creating all the graphics I need, updating my theme, and hopefully getting to a point where I can be proud of the way my website looks. As far as the actual blogging is concerned, I’m going to try and be better. If I’m struggling to think of something to post, I’ll do simple and fun things, like tags.
Fun fact: the entire reason I started this blog is because I love reading book tags and I wanted to be able to participate in them.
I’m definitely eager for this blog to improve. It’s not just about building a community – this is also a very personal project for me, and I want to continue watching it grow into something I can be proud of. I’m notorious for abandoning my projects and this blog is the one thing I haven’t even tried to let go of. I’m doing this to prove to myself that I can, that I’m worthy and I can create things people care about. I’m doing it for myself, and also for everyone who’s ever thought they can’t. You can.
For such a simple post, this was inexplicably hard to write. Maybe I’m stuck in a rut, maybe it’s writer’s block, who knows. I feel better after getting it all out, though. I’m not where I want to be right now, but I’m getting there. That’s the important thing.
If I were a book character, this would be the boring chapter of my story where I’m training up to go on my epic quest. If I were a book character in a movie adaptation, this would be the 20-second montage before we get to the good stuff. But it’s real life, so this part lasts a little longer than it should. It’s not particularly entertaining, but I know if I just keep going it’ll pave the way to the good part. So I’ll keep going.
