Hello my friends! How was your reading year in 2019? Did you get to any good new releases? I didn’t think I’d read many, but Goodreads tells me different! Turns out I just don’t pay that much attention to when my books were published π So to kick this list off, I’m looking back at all the 2019 releases I read this year!

After that little recap, it’s time to look forward to 2020!

Loveless by Alice Oseman | April 30th

Okay, there are so many things I’m excited for here. First of all, Alice Oseman. Secondly, main character discovering that she’s aromantic asexual. Yes, I’m talking own-voices aro-ace representation!!! I’m already such a huge fan of the amazing, realistic representation Alice writes. Her honest and relatable characters are always memorable, so I can’t wait to meet newest main character Georgia and find out where she fits in the wonderful world Oseman has created.
Dark and Deepest Red by Anna Marie McLemore | January 14th

Anna-Marie McLemore is renowned for their magical queer fantasises and somehow I have never read one. I know, I’m ashamed. I’ve always wanted to but I was never quite sure where to start. Then I saw this gorgeous cover and found out that it’s based on Hans Christian Andersen’s The Red Shoes, one of my absolute favourite fairy tales. A brutal retelling featuring a plague that makes women dance to their deaths – I just have to read this.
Aurora Burning by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff | May 5th

I loved Aurora Rising when I finally got to it in November. (Does anyone else pre-order books then just… not read them?) This one is a sequel so my anticipation is pretty self-explanatory. After the dramatic ending of the first book I need to see what this hopeless bunch of space teens get up to next.
Spellhacker by M.K. England | July 22nd

I’m still yet to read M.K. England’s debut novel The Disasters, but so far both their books sound 100% up my street. If I had to describe my ‘type’ for some magical dating site that pairs you with your perfect book I’m pretty sure I would type “crew of queer misfits ft. disaster.” The particular ‘disaster’ featured in this book is a heist to literally steal magic. Magic. Heist.
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas | June 9th

Latinx trans boy. Summoning ghosts. Accidentally summoning the wrong ghost then getting stuck helping him figure out his death. What part of that doesn’t sound good?? I don’t really think I need to explain why I’m excited for this, the plot speaks for itself. I think we could all do with a bit more trans representation on our shelves, and I see it so rarely in fantasy that I really want to boost this!

Are you excited for 2020? I’ve ended up posting this on New Year’s Eve, which I think is pretty appropriate since it’s all about me looking forward to the things I’m most excited for this upcoming year!
So, let’s kick off the New Year right with a positive spirit! What are you most looking forward to in 2020? It can be a book, a movie, your dog’s birthday party, anything that makes you smile! Share it in the comments!

Loveless is absolutely my most anticipated book of the year! I feel like I’ve been waiting for an ownvoices aro-ace coming out book for FOREVER, and of course everything else that Alice Oseman has written is incredible. I’m also super intrigued by Cemetery Boys – it looks like it’ll be wonderful! π
